How to Replace the Canopy on a Hanging Style Offset Cantilever Umbrella
This guide covers hanging style offset cantilever umbrellas — the style where the canopy hangs from the arm with no supporting bar running underneath it. If that is your model, you can shop hanging style replacement canopies and come back to these steps when yours arrives.
Not sure it’s your model?
- A horizontal bar runs from the pole out to the canopy, and the canopy screws into it — see the supported bar cantilever instructions instead.
- The pole runs straight up through the middle of the umbrella — that is a market umbrella, and you need a market umbrella replacement canopy.
Note: depending on your height and setup, you may need a ladder to reach the top of the canopy. If that is not possible, you may carefully lay the umbrella down, though this is not the preferred method.
See it done on an 11ft umbrella
One of our customers filmed themselves fitting a replacement canopy to an 11ft hanging style cantilever umbrella and kindly shared it. Watch the 11ft canopy replacement on YouTube (opens in a new tab).
The method is the same at every size — only the canopy dimensions change. If yours is an 11ft, see the 11ft cantilever canopies.
What you’ll need
- A step ladder, if you cannot comfortably reach the top of the canopy
- Your replacement canopy, unfolded and laid flat
- No tools are required for this style — it fastens with Velcro and ropes
How to replace the canopy: 5 steps
Step 1. Remove the old canopy
- Untie, unstrap, or detach any Velcro securing the old canopy to the frame.
- Slide the old canopy off the umbrella ribs.
Step 2. Prepare the new canopy
- Open the new canopy by separating the Velcro at the top.
- Slip the canopy onto the umbrella by feeding the ribs through the detached air-vent hole.
Step 3. Insert the ribs into the pockets
- Guide each rib end into its corresponding fabric pocket.
- Ensure each rib is fully seated.
Step 4. Secure the top of the canopy
- Pull the canopy upward until it reaches the umbrella’s top center hub.
- Refasten the Velcro at the air vent and tie the rope securely.
Step 5. Final tie-down
- Stand the umbrella upright and open it fully.
- Inside the canopy, locate the four ropes.
- Tie each rope to every other rib toward the center for added stability.
Which replacement canopy fits your umbrella?
Hanging style and supported bar canopies are not interchangeable. The supported bar version has a Velcro flap and screw hole sized for the support arm; the hanging style fastens with Velcro and ropes only. Measure rib-tip to rib-tip across the open umbrella, and count your ribs, before ordering.
Pick your size:
- 11ft, 8-rib — the size shown in the video above
- 10ft, 8-rib hanging style
- 9ft, 8-rib hanging style
- 9ft, 6-rib hanging style

How to make your new canopy last
- Brush to clean: use a soft brush to remove dirt, dust, and loose debris.
- Spot clean only: the canopy is removable. Spot clean with water and mild soap, then allow to air dry completely before use.
- Protect when not in use: always close the umbrella, and use a protective cover made for offset umbrellas to extend canopy life. A cover is far cheaper than a second canopy.
- Close it in wind: close and secure the umbrella whenever it is unattended or wind is forecast. Wind damage is the most common cause of canopy failure.
Common questions
How do I tell a hanging style from a supported bar cantilever?
Look underneath the canopy. If a horizontal bar runs from the pole out to the canopy, you have a supported bar model — use the supported bar guide. If nothing runs underneath and the canopy simply hangs from the arm, you are in the right place.
Will a supported bar canopy fit my hanging style umbrella?
NO IT WILL NOT. The two are cut differently and fasten differently. Order from the hanging style range, not the supported bar range.
Do I need any tools?
Generally no. A hanging style canopy fastens with Velcro and ropes. You may want a step ladder to reach the top hub comfortably.
How do I measure my umbrella for a replacement canopy?
Open it fully and measure straight across, from one rib tip to the rib tip directly opposite. Most cantilever models come out at 10ft or 11ft. If your umbrella is square rather than round, measure edge to edge and see the square cantilever canopies
Do I have to lay the umbrella down to fit the canopy?
Preferably not. Working with the umbrella standing is easier and safer. Lay it down only if you cannot reach the top hub with a ladder.
